Shin-Heike Monogatari : Western-style Japanese Confection
This Western-style confection was created in the image of literary masterpiece The Tale of Heike by famed Japanese author Eiji Yoshikawa. Made of baumkuchen* and filled with red bean paste and white bean paste, this confection is a Nishikido original. *Baumkuchen: Originally a German confection, baumkuchen is a moist cake made by layering batter onto a long pole and baking it layer by layer. Once enough layers are baked, the pole is removed, leaving a large hole in the center of the cake. When sliced, all the layers can be seen, giving it an almost tree ring-like appearance. It was brought to Japan by German POWs who were held on Ninoshima in Hiroshima and is now popular all over Japan.
